Rest doesn’t always come easy for me these days. Remember, there are all sorts of types of rest. Sleep might meet the definition, but it’s also very possible that your sleep isn’t all that restful. Tossing and turning and not getting any REM sleep but being physically in bed for eight or nine hours feels like the opposite of rest in my mind.
This weekend was full of multiple types of rest for me, and for that I’m grateful.
Not a good chunk of Saturday. Saturday sucked, at least half of it did. On Saturday morning, Coco woke us up at 5:18am because she desperately needed me to rub her belly. We went for a nice walk, since I was hoping that would tire her out and give me the chance to sleep better that next night.
Then I went to grab a bagel sandwich and spent time down at the beach looking at the waves and thinking. That thinking turned into reminiscing, which turned into crying, which turned into a little bit of despair. By that afternoon, my brain had settled down considerably. I wish that had happened sooner, but it’s not really something I can control (unfortunately). That was the hardest time I’ve had in the last few weeks, but I made it through.
Since I had posted online about not having a great morning, two friends actually saw that (presumably) and called at different times to check in and spend time chatting with me on the phone. I really enjoyed both of those conversations, and they were absolutely part of me being able to snap back out of that funk.
The rest of the weekend was pretty uneventful. Hence the rest part.
I cooked multiple meals! I did some laundry! I changed my sheets! I did some cleaning! I colored! I watched some movies! I took a nap! I worked on my puzzle! I read a book! I played video games! I listened to music and podcasts! I went to church! All of those things enriched my weekend and all of them definitely counted as rest.
This coming weekend, my friend Mike and I are headed to the DC area for a huge concert. That means that my friend Carmen has volunteered to watch my two dogs AND their two dogs, so she’s about to have a puppy party extravaganza. In preparation for that, we planned an official meet and greet of the four dogs which went VERY well. Nobody got angry at anyone else and all four of them collaborated in barking together at a big dog in the other section of the dog park. A fun time was had by all.
And now it’s time to rest in the literal physical sense. Talk to you soon.
XOXO,
Matt
